The HMS Iron Duke, a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate has been upgraded with the Portsmouth Aviation (PA) Chemical, Biological, Radiological Nuclear (CBRN) filter system during a maintenance period in Portsmouth. Portsmouth Aviation was contracted to supply the design support and worked with Portsmouth Dockyard to install and commission the upgrade.
The PA system uses the NATO Radial filter-,a composite particulate and gas filter meeting STANAG 4447 requirements, and accounts for the latest developments in CBRN equipment and technology. This will lead to reduced through-life cost of ownership by requiring less frequent filter changes. With terrorism becoming a major threat to military infrastructure the new filter will help to protect naval personnel from being exposed to possible attacks.
The new filter is set to be installed in all ships in the Type 23 Class. It has been approved by MoD design teams and technicians and tested on other Royal Navy ships before being approved for the Type 23 Class frigate.
PA is a key innovator within the Defence Community specialising in the design and manufacture of NBC Systems, airborne stores, support equipment and munitions environmental monitoring solutions. PA holds a range of MoD approved design responsibilities including the UK suite of Paveway guided weapons, aircraft bombs and ancillaries. Systems integration and support across Air, Sea and Land is an important element in our international portfolio. The Company has over 20 years experience in the design of NBC systems for defence and homeland security and is a significant stakeholder and supplier to the Royal Navy. PA employs 132 staff on it’s 7 acre site in Portsmouth.
